DJ Switch has publicly criticized Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, following her remarks encouraging poor Nigerians to start small businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli.
The media personality reacted on social media just hours after the First Lady said starting such businesses requires little capital, while highlighting the Federal Government’s efforts to empower low-income Nigerians through grants. Speaking during the event, Remi Tinubu said:
“To start akara business doesn’t take a lot of money. To start roasting corn or kuli-kuli doesn’t take much. We didn’t give them a loan, we gave them a grant. We have encouraged Nigerians as best as we could. I also gave to several others.”
She further disclosed that more than ₦3 billion has been spent on programmes aimed at empowering poor Nigerians.
Reacting to the statement, DJ Switch expressed her displeasure in a strongly worded post, arguing that the government’s focus should be on creating opportunities, infrastructure and technological advancement rather than encouraging citizens to venture into small-scale trading.
She wrote:
“With absolutely no due respect, Remi! Thunder fire you! While other nations are creating spaces and infrastructure to develop their people for this rapidly technologically advancing world, you want us to sell kuli kuli? And the otondos behind you are nodding their greedy necks! I can’t express how much I despise you.”
Her reaction has since sparked widespread debate on social media, with Nigerians expressing divided opinions over both the First Lady’s remarks and DJ Switch’s response.
