Students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Iseyin Campus, have taken to the streets to protest the growing wave of insecurity in the area following a series of violent robberies and assaults.
The protest, which began earlier today, saw hundreds of students marching through major streets in Iseyin, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Stop stealing over properties, our safety matters” “Stop raping our girls” “Enough is Enough,” “We Need Security, Not Sympathy,” and “Save LAUTECH Students.”
The demonstration was triggered by the recent brutal attack on a female student who was assaulted with a cutlass during a robbery at the Ilabe area, a popular student community. The victim, who sustained a deep head injury, remains in critical condition.
According to the protesters, insecurity in Iseyin has worsened in recent weeks, with multiple reports of night robberies, assaults, and theft targeting students.
“We can’t continue living in fear. Every night, someone gets attacked or robbed. We need urgent intervention from the government and school authorities,” one student protester said.
The students have called on the Oyo State Government, security agencies, and the LAUTECH management to deploy more security personnel to the area and ensure that those behind the attacks are brought to justice.As of the time of filing this report, the protest remained peaceful.
