The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology LAUTECH Ogbomoso says it has mobilized its members for a rally scheduled for today, Tuesday, August 26, 2025.
According to a statement by the branch’s president, Engr. Dr Ben Olujimi Dada, the move was part of the union’s efforts to mount pressure on the federal government to address its long-standing demands.He stated that the nationwide rallies were the union’s first decisive response to the government’s continued inaction, warning that if government continues to remain intransigent, unpalatable consequences may ensue.
The rallies will be held simultaneously across universities in the country, with academic activities suspended during the demonstrations.
The one at LAUTECH will be preceeded by a congress and press briefing at the 250 Lecture Theatre, starting 10am.
According to Dada, the National Executive Council, NEC, of ASUU has given the government until its scheduled meeting of August 28 to respond to its demands, after which the next line of action would be determined.
“For over two years, we have kept faith with dialogue and refrained from strikes, but our patience has reached its limit.“If the government continues to play games with the future of our universities, then ASUU will have no option but to take drastic measures,” he warned.Some of the demands include re-negotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, sustainable funding to revitalise universities and granting of autonomy, cessation of victimization of members in some branches among others.
“It is hoped the federal government will be guided to toe the path of peace to avoid another round of disruptions to the academic system in Nigerian universities,”he further submitted.
