The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has explained the reason behind the suspension of its two-week warning strike.
According to the union, the suspension is to allow the Federal Government one month to finalize the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address other unresolved issues affecting the university system.ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, made the announcement on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja, speaking on behalf of university lecturers.
Piwuna noted that the decision followed productive discussions with the Federal Government and the intervention of the National Assembly.
It will be recalled that ASUU’s National Executive Council met on Tuesday to review the union’s position on the ongoing strike.
The ASUU President explained that the warning strike, declared on October 13, 2025, was triggered by the government’s failure to respond to repeated calls to conclude the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and address other welfare-related issues.
He added that the government had since reopened talks with the union through a committee led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed.While admitting that not all matters had been fully resolved, Piwuna stated that meaningful progress had been achieved compared to the situation before the strike.
He also appreciated the efforts of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, and Labour, as well as the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for their role in facilitating dialogue between both parties.
