A fatal accident in Oyo State has claimed the life of a commercial driver after a 40-foot container truck overturned and landed on his Nissan Micra taxi, Eclat Media Reports.
The tragic incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, 2025, in the Soka area along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck, which was loaded with bales of clothing and heading from Lagos to Ibadan, attempted to avoid large concrete barriers left on the road by contractors. During the maneuver, the trailer collided with the Micra, lost control, and toppled, crushing the car and trapping the driver inside.
An eyewitness named Yusuf said, “It was raining when the accident happened. The truck tried to dodge the big barriers on the road, hit the Micra, and then overturned. Those barriers shouldn’t still be there.”
A Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer confirmed that the truck veered off while avoiding the obstacles, dragging the taxi along before it fell over.
Rescue Efforts and Official Reactions
Personnel from the FRSC, the Nigeria Police, and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) promptly responded.
Rescuers worked to cut through the wreckage before retrieving the driver’s body. OYTMA General Manager, Adeoye Adekola, confirmed the fatality, noting that the body had been deposited at Adeoyo Hospital, Ring Road. He added that the container, filled with clothing, was separated from the truck and taken to Sanyo Police Station.
Adekola attributed the crash to speeding, impatience, and the lack of reflective signs on the road barriers. “The truck driver tried to avoid the barrier but couldn’t. He swerved, hit a Micra waiting to pick up a passenger, and the truck overturned, killing the driver instantly,” he explained.
He further stated that the wreckage has been cleared and normal traffic flow has resumed in the area.
