Suspected bandits struck at Oloka village in Oriire local government area of Oyo state Tuesday night mowing down five park rangers during the brutal attack.
The dastardly incident was confirmed to Eclat Media by Baale Oloka Chief Joel Olatunde Alagbe who was recently installed.According to Chief Alagbe the bandits on motorcycles invaded the village at about 10pm and opened fire on the foresters attached to the National Park Service (NPS) who were at the time taking their dinner in front of their office.
“Oloka borders the National Park in that area, so the awogbos (park rangers) had an office in our town. They were sitting in front of their office and eating at about 10pm yesterday when the bandits opened fire on them, in fact, one of them had his body burned which made us suspect they threw bombs at them too,” the Baale said.
After the killing the suspects reportedly escaped into the forest.
However, Chief Alagbe informed he immediately alerted the police who had waded in.
A source at the Divisional Police Headquarters Owode Ogbomoso confirming the incident informed it is being handled by operatives at Ibadan.Further investigations by Ogbomoso Insight revealed the bandits had been threatening to strike for sometime “only to make real their threat when everyone was relaxed,” a resident of Oloka said.This is as a commentator noted “It looked more like a targeted attack. Because from what we knew, no one was kidnapped and the villagers were unharmed, only the men of the NPS were victims.”
The Baale of the town appealed to government and security agents to beef up security in the area to forestall future attacks. He added the suspected bandits has been sighted this morning again but retreated when they rode near Oloka.
