The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it expects a response from the Ministry of Education by Monday (tomorrow) as its ongoing warning strike enters its sixth day today (Sunday).
ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed this in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, saying, “We are expecting feedback from the ministry on Monday.
For now, there is nothing to say.”His statement follows assurances from the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, that the National Assembly is working to mediate and prevent the strike from worsening.
ASUU began a two-week warning strike last Monday after the expiration of its ultimatum to the Federal Government.
The current face-off comes amid negotiations aimed at resolving long-standing disputes between the union and the government.
Earlier, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, revealed that discussions with ASUU and other unions were in their final stages. He stated that the Tinubu administration had released ₦50 billion for Earned Academic Allowances and earmarked another ₦150 billion in the 2025 budget for needs assessment, to be disbursed in three phases.
However, while announcing the strike, Prof. Piwuna maintained that the government had not met the conditions required to halt the union’s decision. “All ASUU branches are hereby directed to withdraw their services from midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025. The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive,” he said.
ASUU’s key demands include finalising the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, payment of withheld 3½ months’ salaries, adequate and sustainable funding of public universities, and an end to the alleged victimisation of members at Lagos State University, Kogi State University (now Prince Abubakar Audu University), and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri.
The union is also calling for payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears, settlement of over four years of promotion arrears, and release of withheld third-party deductions such as cooperative contributions and union dues.
