A lecturer at Kwara State Polytechnic, popularly known as Kwarapoly, has become the subject of online discussions after a video showing him disciplining students on campus surfaced on social media.
The viral clip captured the lecturer ordering a number of students to kneel down before proceeding to cane them, a scene that has generated mixed reactions among internet users.According to reports circulating online, the lecturer has been identified as Dr Zubair, who is said to serve as the director of the institution’s Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) programme.
Sources claimed that the students involved were IJMB candidates who are currently participating in their external examinations, not ND nor HND. The IJMB programme is an Advanced Level (A-Level) educational scheme that enables students to gain Direct Entry admission into the 200 level of Nigerian universities without sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
It was gathered that the examinations were being supervised by external officials from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, who were on campus to monitor the conduct of the exams.
According to those defending the lecturer’s actions, some of the students were allegedly engaging in misconduct during the examination period, prompting him to intervene in an attempt to maintain order and discipline.
Supporters of the lecturer argued that he was acting in a fatherly capacity and sought to demonstrate to the visiting supervisors that efforts were being made to ensure students complied with examination regulations and maintained proper conduct. However, the incident has continued to spark debate online, with some social media users supporting the lecturer’s disciplinary approach, while others questioned whether such methods remain appropriate in a tertiary institution setting.
