Social media users have called on Nigerian authorities to look into popular singer Simi, born Simisola Bolatito Kosoko, after another resurfaced tweet from 2012 sparked fresh controversy online.
The backlash began after Simi made a strong statement condemning sexual offenders, saying rapists should be “burnt and castrated,” amid the widely discussed sexual assault allegation involving TikToker Mirabel, who later withdrew her claims.Her remarks divided opinion on social media, prompting some users to dig through her old posts. Several tweets from 2012 were subsequently brought back into circulation.In some of them, Simi referenced a four-year-old boy named David having a crush on her and “acting like he wana loc lip.” In another tweet, she joked about the child “trying to put hand inside my shet (sic).”
Addressing the criticism, Simi explained that she was 23 years old at the time and living at her mother’s daycare centre while working to establish her music career. She said she often shared humorous, everyday experiences online, including playful interactions with children at the daycare.
The singer maintained that her comments were never intended to be inappropriate, stressing that children can be affectionate and expressive in innocent ways, and her posts were meant to capture such moments light-heartedly.
Hours after she broke her silence, yet another 2012 tweet resurfaced in which she wrote that a child at her mother’s daycare was “harassing” her. At the time, an X user identified as Rotimi Olawale cautioned her, noting that Nigeria has a Child Rights Act. Simi responded by saying, “I am also a child, he is harassing me sexually.”
