Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State has been thrown into panic following another deadly attack by suspected bandits on a Nigerian Park Service (NPS) post at Afejewe, a community close to Oloka. The incident comes barely a day after Oloka was attacked on Tuesday night, where five park rangers reportedly lost their lives.
A reliable source disclosed that the assailants struck the Afejewe NPS post in the early hours of Wednesday, allegedly killing five more operatives. A resident of Ikoyi described the attackers as “merchants of death,” suggesting the assault was a revenge mission. According to him, park rangers had previously raided the criminals’ hideouts in the forest, seizing weapons and ammunition, which may have provoked the attacks. He noted that the bandits deliberately targeted ranger posts rather than villagers.
Fear has since gripped the area, with many students staying away from school. At Ikoyi Grammar School, attendance was reportedly very low, and those who showed up left early, while teachers gathered around the principal’s office for safety.
Meanwhile, the Baale of Oloka, Chief Joel Olatunde Alagbe, has appealed to the government to strengthen security, lamenting that residents have fled the town. The Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police has deployed tactical teams, Mobile Police Force personnel, and EOD units to restore order and prevent further attacks.
